Technology exists to run your automobile on water. Or on vegetable oil. Or to improve your current gas mileage by 5-10X.

European vehicles use higher grade fuels and substantially cleaner diesel. Canada just switched from American 500ppm sulfur diesel to European 15ppm sulfur diesel.

So why are Americans driving about in 17mpg vehicles, when the technology to have 170mpg vehicles has existed since the mid 1930's?

Well, you see...

Every petrodollar spent goes through the US economy. The state gains a substantial amount of revenue from gasoline with gas taxes. Even Saudi Arabian and much of OPEC and oil producing nations' profits go back to American corporations or engineering companies. It is in the state's interest in many ways for American and world vehicles to run inefficiently, on the backs of the taxpayer. This will change.
